刘大川主曾任首都医科大学宣武医院眼科主任。担任北京医学会委员、北京医师协会眼科分会常务理事等重要社会职务。在国内率先开展白内障超声乳化玻璃体切割联合手术，累及完成白内障、玻璃体视网膜手术超万例。

擅长应用微创高速玻璃体切割治疗巨大视网膜裂孔、多发裂孔等复杂视网膜脫离、增殖性糖尿病视网膜病变；采用内界膜覆盖、内界膜填塞等先进新技术治疗黄斑大裂孔；开展保留中心凹的内界膜剥除治疗黄斑劈裂及难治性黄斑水肿。
